根據RDA對於「藝術創作者」（artist）之定義為「負責平面設計、素描、油畫等藝術作品構思與原創之個人、家族或團體（agent）」（An agent responsible for creating a work by conceiving, and often implementing, an original graphic design, drawing, painting, etc.），屬於「創作者」（creator）。

RDA對於「插圖者」（illustrator）之定義為「以繪圖、圖表、照片等補充主要內容，對作品表現形式有貢獻之個人、家族或團體（agent）」（An agent contributing to an expression of a work by supplementing the primary content with drawings, diagrams, photographs, etc. Creation of content that is primarily artistic is excluded.），屬於「貢獻者」（contributor）。

「藝術創作者」（artist）及「插圖者」（illustrator）二者職責實有不同，於編目時，對於西文繪本內容同時兼具文字與圖像之職責關係用語，或可依「以文為主」或「以圖為主」來決定應使用之職責關係用語。「以文為主」者，於欄位100分欄$e使用職責關係用語「$e author, $e illustrator.」；「以圖為主」者，於欄位100分欄$e使用職責關係用語「$e artist, $e author.」。
