一、書目是圖書目錄的簡稱，是提供資料檢索的工具，隨資訊時代的發展，資料的類型也從圖書出版資料擴及非出版類型資料。通常每筆資料包括書名、作者、出版者、出版年、ISBN等記載資料形體的基本元素和揭示資料內容的分類號與主題詞等訊息。藉由書目的提供，使用者可輕易地獲得所需的特定或相關資料。例如：圖書館館藏目錄、新書出版目錄、專題書目、推薦書目、期刊目錄等都是。

AACR2關於書的著錄詳簡層次，規定於規則1.0D，分三級，其中第二級規定於Rule 1.0D2：

For the second level of description, include at least the elements set out in this schematic illustration:
Title proper [general material designation] ＝ Parallel title : other title information / first statement of responsibility ; each subsequent statement of responsibility. -- Edition statement / first statement of responsibility relating to the edition. -- Material (or type of publication) specific details. -- First place of publication, etc. : first publisher, etc., date of publication, etc. -- Extent of item : other physical details ; dimensions. -- (Title proper of series / statement of responsibility relating to series, ISSN of series ; numbering within the series. 著錄元素包括：正題名[一般資料標識] = 並列題名：其他題名資訊 (副題名) / 第一責任者敘述 ; 後續其他責任者敘述.-- 版本說明 / 與版本有關的第一責任敘述.-- 資料（或出版物類型）特殊細節.-- 第一出版地等：第一發行人等，出版日期等.--文獻數量：其他稽核細節 ; 尺寸.-- 集叢名稱 / 集叢責任敘述，集叢的ISSN，集叢編號，子集叢名稱，子集叢ISSN，子集叢編號）.-- 附註.-- 標準號碼
