Barriers to Equity for the Resource Description and Access (RDA) Standard

As the primary cataloging content standard in the US, Resource Description and Access (RDA) should equitably serve the broad diversity of people engaged in cataloging work. This article reports on a survey of catalogers in North Carolina conducted to better understand barriers to using RDA generally and perspectives about the transition from original RDA to official RDA specifically. The results of the survey suggest that catalogers have struggled with the transition to official RDA, but that some catalogers have encountered fewer challenges due to privileged access to resources. This article offers suggestions for making RDA more accessible to more catalogers.
