MARC 21 fields were defined to support three elements in Resource Description and Access: content, media, and carrier types. The fields contain terms and codes that may be used for cataloging all types of resources. The article describes the new fields with attention to their use in cataloging textual electronic serials and integrating resources issued online and in direct access formats.
